Hackney: Shooting on Broadway Market

Apparently, there was a shooting in Hackney last night at approx. 9.30pm, on Broadway Market, near to where I live. My neighbour told me about it earlier.

I tried googling it, but there are so many shootings in Hackney that it won’t be reported in the mainstream news. I mean, it’s not as if we live in a village of 500 people where such an event would be newsworthy.

The funny thing is that my sister an mum are visiting us at the end of September for a week-end. I already had to reassure them that ‘London isn’t really that dangerous’ etc., because they were panicking after the car bombs in London and the terror attacks in Glasgow at the end of June.

I shall not mention the shootings :P

Neither shall I mention that my BF and I had been out on Broadway Market that very night, going for a meal and walked back to the flat at approx. 8.30PM. I.e. we missed the shooting by an hour or so. Given that I already escaped the London bombings of July 05 by approximately one hour (I was on a train to King’s Cross from Scotland on that very day, and if I had taken an earlier train I might well have been caught up in the actual boming), my understanding (quite correctly) is that, while there are more life-threatening incidents in London as a whole, there is still only a small number of people affected by it. I.e. it’s quite unlikely I will die or get injured because of a terrorist attack or a shooting - it’s not a war zone.

Still, explaining that to my mother and my sister who only get the German media discourse on ‘dangerous London’ is a different matter.

  1. I know what you mean.

I live in Birmingham and am going to start a new job in the City Centre in 2 weeks time.

Obviously, my mom, dad and boyfriend were horrified at the prospect when I told them!

  2. how i look at it is it could happen anytime any where and there is no point hiding away, you just have to becareful

  3. Why should we be careful?

Utter disgrace to be honest, to even contemplate accepting this behaviour in ‘modern society’ is a crime in itself.

Tough punishment is needed for these so called uncherished persons, they offer nothing to society but instead take, damge and demoralise evryone who cross them.

    Waste of space!

  4. I agree with tough punishment actually, but I still think that some of the current hysteria is made by the media and the great majority of law-abiding people just get more and more anxious and/or angry, which doesn’t help either.

What I’d really like to see is some form of simple punishment, such as locking the offender up and not let them out until they’ve learned to recite The Love Song of J. Alfred Pufrock (http://www.bartleby.com/198/1.html ) all by themselves. I.e. without human interaction until the recital!
