The IT Crowd

Today I had yet another run-in with IT :P

I phoned them to ask them to install Firefox on my computer, and their response was ‘this has to be signed off by your line manager… and we need to know the business reasons/benefits for it.’

Wow! The business reasons for using Firefox! When I’m struggling along with fucking IE6, a slow computer, and currently being tasked with updating the website, which can be tested just in IE6. I imagine I get on the IT crowd’s nerves. They are probably used to sitting on their bums all day, dealing with easy queries by a workforce stuck in 1999.

Anyway, enough ranting. I actually think I should make friends with the IT crowd. These are the guys that I can talk to on staff nights out, and I have to get my tech and computer talk quota from somewhere. It doesn’t look like I’ll be getting it from anywhere else :|

  1. I install firefox as standard, as i prefer it to ie , and am trying to get my customers to start to use it. as its faster than IE

  2. And so you should. Especially with the slow computers we have at my work, I don’t understand why they don’t at least install Firefox for regular search etc., especially as IE6 doesn’t even have tabs!

Installing FF on every computer and advising the workforce to use it would have the benefit of increasing productivity and efficiency. They could continue to use IE if it works better with certain software they’re using.

You can only lead a horse to water though, you can’t make it drink.

/me leads 80 horses to water

  3. Sound as if, as a website executive, you’d probably have to have a talk with your boss and be assigned a) a faster computer b) admin rights. I have to admit that I, on the other hand, am quite happy to be back in a webby environment – had lunch with the web developers today, and probably 80% tech talk:-)

  4. If you aren’t in IT, they hate giving you full access to your machine. It happened to me as well when I moved away from IT to research. Luckily, I was able to bond with the IT guys and they gave me free reign of my pitiful machine. If I would work in front of my computer all day and I’d be stuck with a really slow one, I’d just bring my laptop.
