Jumping a Red Light = 3 Points

Traffic Enforcement CamerasImage by katmere via Flickr

The other day (Wed night in fact) I jumped a red light and I got flashed by a camera. I just didn’t want to stop as I thought I would be able to get across in time. From the corner of my eyes I could see that it was already red but sometimes you’re already in the process of doing something and past the point of no return :P

I’m a bit annoyed now with myself. Ever since I got the 5 points on my license (which, prior to that, had been clean for 13 years!!), I’ve been driving carefully and especially sticking to all speed limits (the cameras up here in Scotland being a pain in the arse). At no point was I aware though that there are ‘red light cameras’ put up by traffic lights are meant to catch you out when you jump them (I thought cameras were only ever deployed for speeding..).

I’ve googled it to see how many points and £££ I’ll be getting. Apparently it would be 3 points, and £60. That’s no too bad but brings me to the edge at 8 points – because once I hit 12 points, they will take my license off me :(

I.e. if I really do get the letter (apparently they will have to send it within 2 weeks), I really can’t afford any other run-in with the law in that respect, as it would take me close to or over the 12 points. I seriously don’t want my license taken off me. I’d probably continue driving without a license anyway, which is bad bad bad, lenina!
