About 1.0

June 2007

Over the last 6 11 months I’ve been finishing a PhD in Media Studies which I began in September 2002. The blog was started to accompany me on the last few months, through until the VIVA (which took place on the 19th of December 2006). I was awarded a PhD subject to minor amendments, to be completed by March 2nd, 2007. The corrected version was approved and I’m currently waiting for my official letter, probably to arrive by mid/end June the latest.

The blog is called Life after PhD because its main purpose initially was to document the road to getting my life back - those who’ve undertaken PhD research will know what I mean ;) . I intend to change my blog’s subject and title, quite possibly to Diary of a Teleworker (as that’s what I do for a living), once I’ve got my official letter and am therefore finally allowed to start using my shiny new title :D .

Until then, my life is still dominated to some extent by my PhD so I’ll keep Life after PhD for another month or so.

lenina 1.0 lasted from July 2006 - June 2007.

  5. Hey lenina, thought I’d mention if you didn’t know that you have 25 MB of storage on WP.com. I use a flickr or zooomr account to manage my photos and post them from there onto my blog.
    Cheers.

  6. get this - I came here via the imogen sex tape route (”my mate wanted to see it”), and it just happens that I’m in the final stages of a phd too. i quite like your blog, good luck with your writing up.

  7. He Lenina. Stumbled across your blog when you linked to my site. Cheers, and thanks for coming to my show :)

    Ciao!

    Stephen

  8. Yip I came here via the BB search, but only because I was checking my stats! I have ranked 3rd in google since it broke, so stop stealing my traffic! lol You do realise that google are smart and mentioning sex, etc all the time will loose you status in the long term?

Anyway i would like to check out the Phd too, so let me know when you leash it upon the interwebnet!

  9. thanks graham! I had my Imogen idea ’stolen’ and reproduced by another blogger too, and he got loads of traffic :). Good! I’m all for that. With regard to google punishing people mentioning sex too much - I don’t particularly mind. As I’ve said elsewhere, for me it’s all about experimenting with web traffic and web 2.0 and I don’t need, want or crave money, online status, recognition or search engine rankings. Interesting when it happens though! also the people who come here via the Imogen sex tape route are unlikely to stay anyhow, as my blog really isn’t much about sex so the great majority will never return!

  10. Yo!

I enjoy your blog, so I linked it to me blogroll thingey =)

I’m a student who is currently wrestling with his Bachelor degree in Intermedia Studies and Visual Culture, i happen to have a big dream of becoming a phD. myself sometime so this blog of yours is fun to read for someone who hasn’t the slightest Idea as to what it really means to be a PhD student =)

Keep up the good spirit !

    Chris

  11. Hi Chris - thanks for your comment :)

I’d recommend to only to a PhD if you’re seriously thinking of an academic career. I’m currently finding out that within the (media) industry, it might be a disadvantage to have one. I had an interview yesterday and they think I’m overqualified :(

In terms of career, a PhD is a prerequisite if you want to become a lecturer. For everything else though, it’s probably not a good idea - waste of 4 years and at the end of it you have your title but that’s about it… anyway, good luch with your Bachelor :)

  12. good luck with the final parts of the course, I’ve got my LLM dissertation due on the 29/09 so less than a month now! better get started! hope it goes well.
