UK democracy on the decline (flawed democracy)

The UK is at risk of becoming a flawed democracy as it’s increasingly corrupt, and has dropped two places in a global democracy ranking. This isn’t just about the UK though – the increasingly unstable 21st century world needs authoritarianism to keep the increasingly poor masses at bay. Democracy is on the decline overall (only just over 45% of the world now live in a democracy).

Joel Kotkin in his recent Spectator article argues that democracy has been undermined and corrupted by the rising tide of money and administrative power, leading to a rise of autocracy.

Did you know that today (2022), 100 billionaires own half of the world’s assets? That’s one hundred people owning half of the world. Five years ago, this figure was 400. The end of democracy doesn’t surprise Kotkin.

The economic legacy of the last decade is ‘excessive corporate consolidation, a massive transfer of wealth to the top one per cent from the middle class.’ … In Great Britain, where land prices have risen dramatically over the past decade, less than one per cent of the population owns half of all the land.

Kotkin predicts a rising techno-autocracy with concentrated wealth at the top globally and a low-educated mass underclass in permanent rental serfdom and, ultimately, total dependence on the state, and kept in place by digital surveillance.

Sounds a bit conspiratorial to me, but the fact remains that the rich are now much richer and everyone else will be fucked even more in the coming years. This blog URL is lenina (in reference to Huxley’s Brave New World) and Kotkin’s reference to the novel is well chosen:

The tech oligarchs are creating something similar to what Aldous Huxley called in Brave New World Revisited a ‘scientific caste system.’ There is ‘no good reason,’ Huxley wrote in 1958, that ‘a thoroughly scientific dictatorship should ever be overthrown.’ It will condition its subjects from the womb so that they ‘grow up to love their servitude’ and ‘never dream of revolution.’ It will maintain a strict social order and provide enough diversion through drugs, sex and videos to keep their artificially narrowed minds occupied and sated.

I had been wondering why minds have been artificially narrowed in the last couple of decades through education (‘dumbing down’). It’s all starting to make sense now 😐

21st century totalitarianism & Hannah Arendt

I have just finished reading an excellent graphic novel biography of Hannah Arendt, and on p. 165 (below) is the core of her thinking, reflecting on how hell (as exemplified by the Nazi genocide of Jews) happens. Contempt for facts leads to concentration camps. I never realised though she thought both Nazi Germany and Stalin’s Russia were totalitarian – although my own modern take on it is similar (woke left and alt-right = the same underlying thing).

But yeah, check out p. 165 below (‘Benjamin’ is philosopher Walter Benjamin):

My key takeaway is that untruth is a good intentional tactic for political leaders who want totalitarian power. She also says:

The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (that is, the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (that is, the standards of thought) no longer exist. (Arendt, 1968: 474)

So the current post-truth world is perfect environment for totalitarianism both from the left and the right. It works both through external and internal coercion:

Totalitarianism is never content to rule by external means, namely, through the state and a machinery of violence; thanks to its peculiar ideology and the role assigned to it in this apparatus of coercion, totalitarianism has discovered a means of dominating and terrorizing human beings from within.

Another similarity between now and Nazi Germany (through an Arendt lens) is the removal of distinction between private and public, and the elevation of subjective experience. Arendt thought emotions should stay in the private sphere as they are intensely subjective, and thus would impose their singular perspective on politics. The result of this in the case of Nazi Germany according to her was an insensitivity to reality (and thus the atrocities of genocide).

Truth and Politics

I only realised after reading Arendt’s later article Truth and Politics that actually ‘not telling the truth’ is an ‘expected’ / acceptable part of politics (it used to be called rhetoric – the art of persuasion). In the article, she also explores different types of truths (e.g., factual truth and philosophical truth) and explains why citizens must stand up for a factual account of reality (difficult in these ideological days!!).

2022 and Beyond: The Rise of Totalitarianism in the West

I have to write a couple of lines today (1st January ’22) to wrap up the weird experiment of my Year without News that was 2021, and to decide what (if anything) to loosely focus on for 2022. The main outcome of my Year without News has been a realisation that we are kinda fucked here in the West, and increasingly sliding towards totalitarianism. It’s already started, and this time, the main culprit seems to be those considering themselves politically left, who have taken it upon themselves to annihilate and destroy anyone who doesn’t conform to their one exclusive version of reality (left fascism).

I’m interested in the rise of totalitarianism in the West because in the last 5 years or so, I’ve been experiencing an increasingly structural totalising ideology in my civic, public, and professional life and wider society, in a political and social climate where distrust is ubiquitous and polarisation is high. This current phase of history is starkly reminiscent of the period leading to Nazi Germany, and I’m curious how this will play out from the perspective of someone (myself) who is rooted in the late 20th century and who has lived through the golden years of liberal democracies.

Say you’re a regular decent citizen in the West in 2022, contributing to society (working, paying taxes) and living in accordance with the law, and you want to live peacefully and in harmony with your family in your home country – you are now seen by some as:

• Racist (because apparently, unless you are actively anti-racist, you are now racist and part of the problem)
• Anti-human rights (because apparently, unless you agree that men can legally call themselves women even with their penis-rape-instrument intact, you are now anti-human rights and morally wrong and must face the consequences (being cancelled / be destroyed and annihilated)

The weirdest part of it all is that both the left and the right are extremely binary in their thinking, and black and white (but then again, they ARE at the extreme end, so we shouldn’t be surprised as to their binary worldview). It’s full on biblical, orthodox and illiberal to have such a hard-on for feelings and to be so vengeful like both the woke left and the alt-right are. It’s fervent and religious at its core; for example, the other day, a transgender activist on a documentary said that those who are cancelled ‘deserve it’ and need to face the consequences, to feel the pain that the oppressed suffer.

You say ‘an eye for an eye’ or ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ to refer to the idea that people should be punished according to the way in which they offended, for example if they hurt someone, they should be hurt equally badly in return.

I’m not sure where it’s all going to land, but for the purpose of this blog and 2022, all the above is why my loose focus will be on the topic of totalitarianism. Whether that’s reading Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism or observing my own self-censorship and other adaptation strategies to the totalising ideological pressures many of us ordinary citizens are now facing, I’m sure it’ll be an interesting – albeit infrequent – journey!

The end of Boris Johnson / Omnicron

Just a quick news update. I had a chat today with someone and apparently it looks like the end of Boris Johnson is finally in sight. I don’t have all the details but there are some scandals, e.g. the Tories having a Christmas party last year when no one else was allowed to see their loved ones (this has alienated their working class and populist fanbase). And then various other self-enrichment scandals (PPE contracts) and some other corruption to do with Boris’ flat just now. They also discovered cocaine in lots of the toilets in Westminster recently. Boris also made a fool of himself at a business event a few weeks ago when he quoted Peppa the Pig (but then what do you expect from Boris “Fuck Business” Johnson).

All of this is generating extreme cut through and coverage in the media for weeks on end (including right-wing media such as Daily Mail etc.). Lots of content and negative stories created about the Tories including on social media and online – good luck burying that with your digital PR and SERP manipulation!

A complete disaster for the Tory brand as they have now alienated all their fan bases (business hates them, the just about managing / declining middle class), the working class and populists are beginning to lose trust, and young people hate them anyway. That leaves just hardcore Tory voters. You know who they are.

Unfortunately, this won’t get rid of the Tories themselves as they’ll just use Boris as the fall guy to be replaced by Rishi (Rishki?), who is a billionaire 😐 .

The second piece of news I got exposed to in the last week or so was regarding a new variant of COVID-19. I think it’s spelled Omnicron but I’m not sure. I shouldn’t google it (as I try to live without news!) but I might have to. One sec.

I live in a third (world) country

I realised the other day that I now live in a third country. The birthday card I had sent to my sister in Germany got stuck in customs, and not only arrived 5 days late (despite my sending it 10 days early to account for Brexit!) but had also been opened and the €100 I had put in had been stolen. I realised then that this is now the reality. Things aren’t going to be as before as this island has cut itself off and is adrift.

A good illustration of how and why I now live in a third country is below. The UK’s Brexit strategy has led to it being isolated from the countries around it, floating around in an unhinged manner. This is our reality now. Cut off and flailing.
